“This commission was created by the establishment and the friends of the establishment are now part of the commission. Is it really an investigation? Zelikow is a symbol of the way this inquiry has been constructed. As far as the Clinton and Bush administrations being held to account – we won’t hear about it. It is not about transparency, it is just there to appease the public.” [--9/11 Family member Andrew Rice]

Upon the signing of the 9/11 Commission into law, President Bush stated that the Commission’s work was their most solemn duty. He also stated that the Commission must go wherever the facts may lead. We hope that the following qualifying language presented in the letter to the Commission regarding Ms. Rice’s testimony does not know contradict these words:

In an interview with 60 Minutes Ms. Rice makes an interesting statement when asked about the nature of the Commission’s investigation. It is a fair characterization of the focus on the Commission which has spent far too little time publicly examining the actual events of the day –particularly the inexplicable total collapse of air defenses around our nation’s Capitol.
In the notes section I raise some concerns about Ms. Rice’s public statements about the nature of pre-attack intelligence.

WASHINGTON – (KRT) – A member of the 9/11 commission said Friday that national security adviser Condoleezza Rice indicated in a private session she was wrong to have once stated no one expected terrorists to use planes as missiles.
The White House reportedly also backpedaled Friday on whether President Bush pressed counterterror czar Richard Clarke the day after the attacks to find evidence that Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein was involved.

Statement of the Family Steering Committee — March 27, 2004
The Family Steering Committee demands the appearance of National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice under oath in a public hearing immediately. We believe that testifying before the Commission in a public forum is Ms. Rice’s moral obligation given her responsibility as National Security Advisor to protect our nation. The death of nearly 3000 innocent people warrants such a moral precedent.
